ST CROIX — Hang ten with the first and only locally owned and licensed surf school in St. Croix. St. Croix Surf & SUP was founded in 2022 by lifelong Crucian surfer Bryce Scott and his wife Amanda. Thanks to over 30 years of local ocean knowledge, the company strives to provide the best surf and SUP (stand-up paddleboard) experience that will be fun, exhilarating, and safe. Since the age of 3, Bryce has found comfort in the crystal blue waters around his St. Croix home. He learned to surf at the tender age of 6 on the shores of Ha’Penny Beach, one of the locations where surf lessons are held. He has over 30 years of surfing experience that has taken him all over the Caribbean, the United States East Coast, Hawaii, Costa Rica, and Indonesia. This extensive experience has allowed him to hone his ocean knowledge and wave judgment, ranging from wave selection to board handling, paddling, and the infamous pop-up. “St. Croix boasts perfect beginner waves,” says Bryce. “In each surf lesson, we choose from 3 small wave surf breaks, depending on ocean conditions and weather, to get started.” Because safety remains their top priority, all lessons are conducted in a controlled and shallow environment when the surf is small and manageable.
Introductory surf lessons teach students the basics of surfing, where each person will have the opportunity to ride their first wave with expert instruction from Bryce. After a short overview of surf/SUP basics, students head into the water to catch their first wave. Students also learn about surfing etiquette, adjusting the pop-up and/or paddling, body position, balance, turning, and more. The rest of the lesson is spent in the water catching and riding waves with instruction between rides on wave selection and managing oneself with their board in the waves. Single lessons are $85 per person, and lesson location is determined based on the water conditions and group dynamics. For those who desire to advance their surf skills and knowledge, book the three-lesson surf package with Bryce. These 2-hour lessons will give participants more one-on-one instruction to work on maneuvers and surf more demanding waves. Three-lesson packages are $200 and valid for 6 months.
