A few years ago, in a conversation about how to enhance tourism and increase the number of cruise ships that come to St. Croix, Diane Burns kept coming back to a favorite childhood memory. A zip line! She and her cousins had loads of fun on a cable that her grandfather hung between two trees.
The activity has come a long way since then, and Diane and Cosmo Williams are planning to bring “The Caribbean’s most scenic zip” to St. Croix!
Also the longest in the Caribbean, Carambola Zip Line will be nearly 5,000 linear feet. The tour will start with a scenic drive in an open-air safari bus from Carambola Golf Club to the first of five platforms. Zipliners will see our sister islands, St. Thomas, St. John and the BVI’s, as well as lush valley views and an overlook of the spectacular Trent Jones-designed golf course.
Carambola Zip Line is also partnering with CHANT (Crucian Heritage and Nature Tourism) to create nature programming for local schools and tourists alike. The canopy zip line will be 200 feet above the tree line with opportunities to learn about the beautiful natural resources and wildlife of St. Croix.
This project has been in the works for more than two years and they are hopeful that Carambola Zip Line will open in mid-April. They started boring holes into the ground for the platforms in mid-December. Once that process is done, they anticipate about 90 days to build the platforms, secure the cables, and train their team of professional guides.
