Though 2017 has brought its share of challenges, this time of year we are reminded that living on St. Croix gives us much for which to be thankful. As we carve out time to give thanks, it’s also important to remember the spirit of giving to those less fortunate. Many homes have been badly damaged. Families have been displaced. Without electricity, some don’t have an oven to prepare their traditional meals.
This Thanksgiving, a group of volunteers will feed the less fortunate and homeless, using the facilities of Holy Cross Church and St. Mary’s School. The effort is done with the help of people island-wide and beyond, including churches, synagogues, mosques, and non-religious persuasions.
Organizers plan to serve more than 1,000 meals on Thanksgiving Day. They are seeking donations of any size. Here is their wish list:
- Donate a raw or cooked turkey
- Donate a raw or cooked ham
- Donate a pan of cooked mac and cheese
- Cook a turkey provided by others
- Cook a ham provided by others
- Provide a cake, provide and cook vegetables, or make a salad, etc.
- Make a monetary donation
- Recruit others to help or fulfill your commitment
- Carve turkeys and hams
- Clean up and keep the dining hall clean
- Remember us in your prayers
If you plan to donate food, contact Holy Cross Church to let them know: 340-773-7564. Uncooked food should be dropped off on Tuesday, November 21, between 10am and 2pm. Cooked food can be dropped off at the St. Mary School cafeteria between 8 and 9am on Thanksgiving Day.
Checks can be made out to Holy Cross Church with “Thanksgiving” noted in the memo section. The mailing address for Holy Cross Church is 45A Queen Street, Christiansted, VI 00820.
May you have plenty to be thankful for this Thanksgiving and always!
