ST THOMAS — The newest gem in Buccaneer Mall, Island Booksellers, has created a vibrant and welcoming space for book enthusiasts and the local community. Owners Claire Starkey and Tom Klotzbach officially opened the bookstore on December 10th, 2024, with over 10,000 books in stock plus a wide selection of art supplies, board games, journals, toys and gifts.

From classic and contemporary fiction to sci-fi, fantasy, romance, and crime, the store caters to a wide range of interests and reading levels. Their expansive non-fiction section features biographies, memoirs, business and finance, history, and self-help books. A curated collection highlighting Caribbean authors, as well as dedicated areas for young adult literature and graphic novels, ensures the store reflects the cultural richness found in St. Thomas. For young readers, the children’s room boasts more than 1,500 picture and chapter books, perfect for budding bibliophiles ready to stretch their imaginations.

Starkey and Klotzbach are passionate about making Island Booksellers more than just a store but rather a hub for community connection. “My husband always had dreams of opening a bookstore and finally the timing worked, given our recent retirement and an ideal location,” Starkey shared. “Our first priority has been ensuring that our stock is inclusive of all reading preferences and literacy levels.”

The couple plans to launch collaborations with local book clubs, spoken word groups, and other community organizations to further cement the store’s role as a cultural gathering place.

Island Booksellers is also committed to supporting fellow small businesses in St. Thomas. Starkey shared they want to work in concert with other establishments, complementing rather than competing with them and supporting their events whenever possible. Their efforts already include a partnership with the Virgin Islands Children’s Museum. The bookstore will sponsor one annual family pass to the museum each month, which customers can win through raffles.

Island Booksellers is open Tuesday to Saturday from 11am to 6pm and Sundays from 12pm to 5pm. To learn more, follow them on Facebook and Instagram, or visit their website at www.islandbooksellers.com.
