ST CROIX — Feast your eyes and tastebuds on the juicy burgers, fresh salads, and boozy drinks available at Cheeseburgers in Paradise on St. Croix’s east end. For more than 35 years, this popular eatery was a staple for visitors and residents on island. A brief closure in 2023 led to new ownership in early 2024. Sugar Mill Hospitality, LLC is the new owner of the family-owned and operated bar and restaurant, with an award-winning executive chef at the helm of the kitchen operations.
Executive Chef Matt Thole brings more than 25 years of culinary experience to Cheeseburgers in Paradise. A veteran of multiple AAA four-diamond rated restaurants, Thole has revamped the menu to marry the flavors of Crucian/Caribbean and Southern/Lowcountry cuisines. “I’m thrilled to join Cheeseburger in Paradise and have the incredible opportunity to bring ‘lowcountry flair’ to the island with a new spin on the already successful menu,” said Thole. “Both the family that owns the establishment and I are from Charleston, South Carolina, but we also have a deep love for St. Croix, so I’m excited to bring some of our tastes from home to the island.”
Owner Theron Sandy II shared the excitement around seeing a dream actualized with Cheeseburgers in Paradise. “To be able to re-open the Cheeseburger in Paradise kitchen that so many customers have loved over the years under the leadership of our tremendous new Executive Chef is a dream come true,” said Sandy. “We’re confident that our patrons will absolutely love Matt’s new dishes with his signature Lowcountry spin, as well as our classic offerings that so many customers remember quite fondly.”
Come out and dine on wings tossed in a homemade mango habanero sauce, or try one of their many specials, like whole red snapper escovitch or Chef Matt’s signature gumbo. Thole uses fresh ingredients and makes all sauces and dressings fresh and from scratch. In addition to the great food, their weekly karaoke and bingo nights are a guaranteed good time, plus live music on Saturday nights lends a cool, relaxing vibe accompanied by delicious food and ice-cold drinks.
Cheeseburgers in Paradise is open 7 days a week. The bar opens at 11am, and dinner service is available from 4pm to 10pm. If the crowd is rocking, they’ll keep the party going until midnight or later. It’s encouraged to call beforehand.
