ST THOMAS — There is no shortage of breathtaking views across St. Thomas. However, you’ll be hard-pressed to find one as stunning as the view found on the island’s north shore at Drake’s Seat! Visitors to this popular overlook are rewarded with panoramic views of the surrounding turquoise waters of Magen’s Bay, lush landscapes, and the U.S. and British Virgin Islands to the east.

Drake’s Seat is named for the famous English explorer and privateer Sir Francis Drake. Legend has it that Drake used this bay as an anchorage point for his ships. He is said to have climbed to this vantage point to survey the vast expanse of the Caribbean Sea for approaching ships. At this seated location, he would strategize and plan his keen naval maneuvers while identifying ships he and his men would later plunder. Whether or not the seat itself is an artifact from Drake’s time remains a mystery, but the allure of the location and its association with the famed explorer makes it a must stop visit for history lovers.

It’s no surprise that the journey to Drake’s Seat is an adventure! Wind through the island’s narrow roads that cut through the tropical landscape as you make your way to the famous hilltop seat. Once at the top of the hill, there’s no denying that the journey to this point was worth the reward – panoramic views as far as the eye can see. The brilliant blue waters of Magens Bay contrast with the rolling emerald green hills seen on either side, creating the picture-perfect backdrop. The memorable sunsets seen at Drake’s Seat cannot be missed. As the sun begins its descent below the horizon, warm hues of orange, red, blue, and purple transform the sky to cast an illuminating glow over the landscape. A sense of tranquility and awe washes over you in the moment, which is why this spot is a crowd favorite for locals and tourists alike.

Like many things on St. Thomas, timing is everything. Drake’s Seat is best visited early in the morning or on days when there are few cruise ships in the harbor. The small, but open parking area at the overlook can be packed at times but, people move through the area quickly after snapping a noteworthy pic or two (or three)! Be sure to include Drake’s Seat in your upcoming visit to St. Thomas. We promise you’ll be glad that you did!
