Inspired by Virgin Islands art, culture and history, St. Croix-born artist, teacher and, now, author, Danica M. David, has published a book of art, poems and recipes called Creative Callaloo. Featuring the talented poet, Winifred “Oyoko” Loving, and accomplished chef, Mark E. Davis, the book serves readers a delicious, passionate and stimulating blend of recipes, poetry, art, history, and more. Creative Callaloo is vibrantly illustrated with the colors and flavors of the Virgin Islands on every page.
Just released in December 2018, the book is meant to be enjoyed by Virgin Islanders, tourists or those just interested in our St. Croix island culture. You can order a hardcover, author-signed copy online, or stop by Undercover Books in Gallow’s Bay near the Coldwell Banker office or the Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts gift shop. We think it would make an excellent housewarming gift for some of our future clients!
“Immerse yourself in the vivid colors of St Croix; savor the aromatic taste; attune your ears to the compassionate words, and you will be satiated by this richly textured collection.”– Opal Adisa Palmer, author of 16 books including, Look! A Moko Jumbie and editor of Interviewing the Caribbean
Danica David was born and raised on St. Croix and has had a full career in the arts. She has been a visual artist/painter for more than 25 years; a studio owner for 17 years (check out Danica Art Studio); an art educator for 15 years, currently at St. Croix Educational Complex High School and as an adjunct professor at the University of the Virgin Islands; and a graphic professional designer for ten years.
“The artwork by Ms. David serves as a retrospective of her twenty-five year career as an artist and the poems by Ms. Loving perfectly play with the imagery, complementing and adding a new dimension to the paintings. The savory recipes by Mr. Davis tie it all together for a truly sensorial experience.”
