Thanksgiving is a time of expressing gratitude for our many blessings — and, for many, it’s also a time to give back to our community. In the spirit of Thanksgiving, we thought we’d highlight a St. Croix nonprofit who is doing wonderful things on our island, including a few opportunities to get involved right now.
St. Croix Environmental Association’s mission is to promote the conservation of environmental resources, provide education and advocate for environmentally responsible actions that benefit St. Croix.
Southgate Coastal Reserve is a 100-acre nature reserve owned by SEA that encompasses a coastal salt pond, mangrove forest, beach forest and upland grassland. In effort to restore and improve habitat for wildlife at Southgate, SEA is planting 150 native trees. There are two opportunities to join like-minded volunteers for a Native Tree Planting at Southgate Coastal Reserve:
- Saturday, November 24, 9am to noon
- Saturday, December 29, 9am to noon
The Reserve is just north of East End Road, about 3 miles east of Christiansted. The property serves as habitat for resident and migrating birds, many of which are threatened or endangered, as well as a nesting beach for three sea turtle species that are also threatened or endangered.
SEA is also hosting a Holiday Auction featuring many of our favorite St. Croix businesses. It’s a wonderful way to do some holiday shopping and get some fun gift ideas, all while supporting environmental conservation and education. Plus, SEA is sharing fun green facts and tips related to the auction items on their Facebook page.
Team isLand-de Wilde of Coldwell Banker St. Croix Realty is a proud For the Love of SEA business partner of St. Croix Environmental Association. As ambassadors of St. Croix — from our picturesque hillsides lush with incredible flora and fauna to our pristine coastlines where we can witness the beauty of sea turtles, birds and other marine wildlife — we are thankful for this environment and those who work so hard to protect it.
