Why We Wear Pink: The Critical Impact of Early Detection in the US Virgin Islands
At the Coldwell Banker St. Croix Realty and Coldwell Banker St. Thomas Realty offices, we traded our signature blue for a vibrant pink to stand in solidarity with the thousands of Virgin Islanders and their families impacted by breast cancer. While awareness is crucial, funding is what enables local nonprofits to provide life-saving services and, in addition to wearing pink, we are collecting donations to support local initiatives in the profound difference they make in our community.

The Stark Realty: Breast Cancer in the United States Virgin Islands
In the US Virgin Islands, cancer remains a critical health concern. For women in our territory, breast cancer is reported to be the number one cause of cancer deaths, highlighting the urgent need for local awareness, screening and support. This startling statistic is a call to action for every person in our community. When caught early, the five-year survival rate for breast cancer is dramatically higher – often above 90%. Early detection is the best deterrent against this disease.

How to Get Tested: Early Detection is Your Best Defense
We can all make a difference in these outcomes, and it starts with self-care and scheduling. The key screening methods recommended are annual mammograms, annual clinical breast exams and monthly breast self-exams. Talk to your healthcare provider to determine the best screening schedule for you based on your personal and family history.

The Importance of Early Screening: It Saves Lives
In our island community, delayed screening can be a major factor in late-stage diagnosis. We understand that fear, cost or accessibility can be barriers. However, resources and support are available to help you overcome them. A mammogram can detect cancer years before a lump can be felt.

Supporting Our Own: Local USVI Resources
The Virgin Islands community has incredible resources dedicated to reducing the burden of breast cancer. They are working tirelessly to provide financial aid, education and emotional support to our neighbors, ensuring that treatment is never out of reach.
The Yvonne Ashley Galiber Breast Cancer Foundation (YAGF) is a foundational resource focused specifically on early detection. YAGF’s mission is to save lives by removing financial barriers, providing direct assistance for medically underserved and uninsured individuals to receive critical care breast cancer screenings, diagnostic mamograms, biopsies and pathology reports. By funding these vital initial steps, YAGF has proven that early detection is the best defense and is a cornerstone of the USVI’s fight against this disease.
Cancer Support Virgin Islands (CSVI) offers comprehensive, holistic support for anyone impacted by any cancer across St. Thomas, St. Croix, and St. John. CSVI ensures that no one fights alone by providing financial assistance for treatment-related costs, travel for off-island care, lodging, prescription co-pays, and even basic living expenses like utility bills. They also foster community through advocacy and support groups, working to transform a patient’s journey from fear and isolation to hope and connection.

A Call to Action from Coldwell Banker US Virgin Islands
Today, as we wear our pink, we also renew our commitment to the health of our community.
If you are 40 or older, please call your doctor and schedule your screening mammogram today. Encourage a mother, a sister, or a friend to do the same.
