Are you planning your winter travels to and from St. Croix? Consider accompanying a Cruzan cat or dog to the States to their furever home.
Paws from Paradise is an animal transport program that gives local St. Croix rescues a chance at a stateside home. They work with a network of partner organizations based all across the U.S. who accept our homeless pets and find them loving homes. The network currently consists of more than 20 organizations that pick-up at more than 30 airports!
Unfortunately, pets can’t travel by themselves. Whether you’re an islander traveling home for the holidays, a snowbird escaping the cold, a tourist seeking some fun in the sun, or maybe you’re meeting with one of our Realtors to find your island dream home, you can escort a pet to the mainland as a carry-on or checked bag on American Airlines, Delta or JetBlue.
All you have to do is fill out the Pet Reservation Form once your flight is booked. Paws from Paradise takes care of everything else:
- They add the pet(s)s to your airline reservation and pay any associated feed.
- They meet you at the airport with the pet in a soft crate.
- They provide wipes, water and snacks (for the dog, not you!).
- They organize all of the necessary paperwork.
- A representative from the partner rescue will meet you at your final destination.
The program typically sends about 30 animals off-island each month. This October, Paws from Paradise will reach a new milestone by sending more than 50 pets to meet their new best friends.
“We look for any sort of traveler,” says Alison, Paws from Paradise Coordinator. “Even if it is someone’s first and last time coming to St. Croix, if they’re a pet lover and willing to help, we’ll accept it!”
Paws from Paradise is hosting a Pet Toy Making Class on Thursday, October 27, at The Blue Mutt. For a $15 donation, you will learn to make a cute toy to take home to your cat or dog, plus you can make as many toys as you’d like for Paws from Paradise to sell as a fundraiser. The toys will be available for sale at The Blue Mutt, other retailers on island, and at events like Jump Up.
