Ukraine’s Maksym Kriat was ecstatic, after crossing the finishing line to take first place in the men’s division of the St Croix Ironman 70.3 Triathlon. Last year Kriat, the 26 year old finished in sixth place, so you can only imagine how thrilled he was when he took the lead and managed to retain that.

A jubilant Krait added “ i would like to thank St. Croix for all the support you have shown me, and welcoming me with open arm’s”. Kriat, who lives in New Jersey, worried he was going to be taken by Luke Bell, who finished second, because he started off ahead of him in the water and was also the first off the bike. He said he ran as fast as possible, and was able to overtake Bell by just 15 seconds, finishing the race at 4:11:43.

“I took a small crash on my bike going up the hill,” he said, looking down at his bloodied elbow. “I am just happy – it was quite a challenging course,” he finished.

This has been Kriat’s third triathlon victory but to date the most rewarding. He also said this course has to be one of the toughest in the world, which in turn only makes it even more challenging. Krait goes on to say “This has been the greatest achievement of my life.”
