A fiber optic submarine cable is planned by Cable & Wireless Communications to connect Jamaica, Dominican Republic, and the Virgin Islands. The project will cost about $35 million US and install cable as well as underwater equipment to join transmission terminals.

Fiber optic cable will provide the next generation system for international communications for these countries. It will provide better internet service, options for wide band and higher speeds, internet telephony, and better interconnectivity between all countries in the geographical region.

The project is part of the commitment by C & W Communications for the socio-economic development of the Dominican Republic to reduce the digital gap and increase skills in information technology.
