St. John artist, Janet Cook-Rutnik, is currently exhibiting a multimedia presentation at the Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts in Frederiksted, St. Croix through May 29. The exhibition, The Journey , includes digital images, videos and paintings dealing with looking, seeing and experiencing things in a “time stilled” dimension. The artist says her presentation is about “being conscious of time as we journey forth in our daily lives, in our dreams and in our memories.”
There are 4 parts to the multimedia show. The videos were shot in New York City, the Caribbean, and Africa, and explore loving globally. In a series called Looking, she painted over discarded photos and invites viewers to be interactive. Seeing is a series of still photos shot on St Croix and St Thomas islands. The 4th part, Time – One and a Half Minutes, shows 2 videos simultanously, Breathing and the Swimmer, to explore the physical sense with the abstract idea of time.
The Journey is funded in part by a grant from the Virgin Islands Council on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts and is sponsored by the Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts. The show will be on view until May 29.
