After more than 2,000 online votes were cast, Garvin Powell of St. Croix was the overall winner in the Department of Tourism’s “Share My USVI” photo contest.

Powell’s winning picture – a richly detailed portrait called “Festival” taken during the 2008 St. Croix Festival Adult Parade – along with the contest’s other top photos can be seen at www.ShareMyUSVI.com.

The Share My USVI Photo Contest, a contest for amateur photographers in the Virgin Islands, was launched in February by the Tourism Department.

Almost 1,000 contest entries were submitted and narrowed down by a panel of judges in April. The top finalists’ photos were then displayed on a website for the public to vote on. Each voter could cast eight votes: one vote in each of the five main categories and three votes for the youth submissions in the three age categories.

The two photos in the main contest that earned the most votes, regardless of category, were named the contest winner and first runner-up. Powell was the over-all winner. The runner-up was John Gordon of St. Croix for his photo “Sunset at Sandy Point.”

Tourism launched the contest as part of a website redesign and rebranding initiative, with the goal of creating a collection of local images that best capture the essence of the territory. Photos will be used for marketing to potential visitors.
