Sugar Poetry Book, Images and Insights of a Sugar Era, was recently published and reviwed on the Reef Radio Station in St Croix by Lorna Callender. For 3 hours, she heard sugar stories from past workers in the sugar industry in St. Kitts, Nevis, St Croix, St. Thomas, and St. John. The radio program was a quasi-history lesson, highlighting the “sugar memories” of the islanders. A lecturer from the U of the VI in St. Thomas even called for a copy of the recording, to use in the University’s social development courses.

As noted in the Democrat, “Amazingly for nearly every story told, there was a poem in the book related to the experience which was read at the appropriate instance. This drew great praise for the book from the listening audience and before the session was over many callers in St. Croix and St. Thomas were asking where they could find a copy.”

Stories from every niche of the sugar industry – trains, machine shop, boilers, sailors – were told on the talk show, including ones on how sugar was made and tested.
