Every year, a day is set aside in January to celebrate the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. King’s legacy will be honored Monday with several events.

The Central Labor Council Civil Rights Committee will host the 16th annual “Freedom March and Ceremony” at 10 a.m. starting at Plaza Extra East and ending at Island Center. A rally will follow at Island Center. Student groups, marching bands, sororities and fraternities, the JROTC, various community groups and unions will participate.

Americorps members of the Lutheran Social Services in a partnership with the Boys and Girls Club will lead a cleanup of the Boys and Girls Club facilities in Frederiksted and Christiansted in an effort to get them reopened. Cleanup will begin at 9 a.m. Volunteers are still needed.

Bethlehem House in Christiansted will get a fresh coat of paint. Painting begins at 10 a.m.

Another event affiliated with the Day of Service will be held Jan. 24. Starting at 7 a.m., volunteers will perform a facelift to the Salvation Army’s property in Estate Whim.
